TAG Heuer and Fragment Design introduced their second collaborative timepiece this month. This time with a manufacture movement inside.
The TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Heuer 02 was designed by Fragment Design, using a 44 mm diameter stainless steel Heuer C-case from the 1960s and 1970s.
Interestingly, the case exists in the current catalog for the Formula 1 collection which all feature caliber 16 chronograph movements that are outsourced as opposed to the elevated Heuer 02 manufacture movement found inside the latest Fragment Design Special Edition. The first TAG Heuer x Fragment Design project, released in 2018, also came with an outsourced Swiss movement.
Hiroshi Fujiwara is the founder of Japanese-based Fragment Design, a streetwear label created in 2003 that has collaborated with some of the most renowned names in fashion, design, and art.
Hiroshi Fujiwara explained: “Redesigning this TAG Heuer chronograph timepiece gave me the opportunity to use an existing legacy to create a new one. I gave the design a modern and exceptional flair with the red case back, which reflects one of the brand’s logo colors and also gives it a completely new and evolved character.”
From the unique pencil-shaped rhodium-plated hour and minute hands with fire-red lacquer painted accents and fully painted needle-shaped chronograph seconds hand to the shiny red printed squared dots and the double lighting Fragment Design logo at 12 — the design is unmistakably Fujiwara.
Surrounding the sapphire crystal is a steel bezel with a polished black ceramic insert that has been engraved with a tachymeters scale that’s been filled with a granular silver paint.
Further accentuating the shiny — not matte — design is a black opaline dial, marked with “FRAGMENT” in wide along the peripheral of the dial. The two counter dial, small date symmetrically positioned at 6, and minimalist aesthetic give this sporty timepiece a distinguished presence on the wrist.
Flip over the case and the sapphire caseback has a fiery red tint giving the 4Hz automatic 80-hour caliber Heuer 02 chronograph movement with it’s Geneva stripes, blackened skeletonized rotor, and column-wheel with vertical clutch mechanism a red-hue. The crystal has the signature double lightning bolts, giving this collector’s timepiece yet nod to Fragment Design.
The Fujiwara design includes an exclusive five-row steel bracelet with a butterfly folding clasp, which like the case, has been polished and brushed to catch the light. Features a screw-down crown and screwed caseback. Water-resistance is rated to 100 meters. Each of the 500 limited edition TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Heuer 02 pieces are engraved with an individual number 1-500.
