Launched a few years ago, the Orion 1989 Special edition timepiece, from German watchmaker NOMOS Glashutte, pays homage to the fall of the Berlin Wall, which happened in 1989.

The timepiece comes in a three-part stainless steel case measuring 38 mm x 8.86 mm, with slightly curved sapphire crystals protecting the dial and the caseback. These dimensions result in a perfectly proportioned dress watch that wears very comfortably.

An anthracite dial with stamped gold indices, and silver printed minutes and seconds graduations make for an attractive aesthetic. Baton-shaped steel hands are gold-plated, further adding to the elegance of the look.

Inside, is NOMOS’s Alpha caliber, which is their first manufacture movement, and most popular. Understandably so as it is a mere 2.6 mm in thickness, yet has all the decorations we have come to expect from this beloved German watchmaker: rhodium three-quarter plate and balance bridge with Glashütte ribbing, ratchet and crown wheel with Glashütte sunburst, tempered blued screws, and circular graining on the mainplate. The Alpha also has a stop-seconds mechanism, Glashütte stopwork, Triovis fine adjustment regulator, 17 jewels, a Nivarox 1A balance spring, Incabloc shock protection, and a 43-hour power reserve.

Water-resistance is 30 meters. An anthracite suede leather strap was made for this special edition watch. Lug width is 19 mm. NOMOS has taken their Orion and made using grey, gold, and silver hues, made a more elegant dress watch, all while paying homage to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The retail price is $2,620.
