At Baselworld 2017, Armin Strom surprised collectors by introducing a revolutionary concept for the watch industry, an online configurator. Being conscious of the growing desire for clients to own a piece that reflects their personality, Armin Strom offers clients a rare opportunity to imagine and to create their personalized watch. By choosing amongst various options, thanks to a specially conceived website, collectors can see in real time their compositions come alive.
The Armin Strom Mirrored Force Resonance joins the online configurator Already comprising 6 of Armin Strom’s most emblematic watches, the online configurator sees its possibilities augmented by welcoming the Mirrored Force Resonance. Collectors now have the option to configure this watch by choosing among 2 different case materials (stainless steel and 18k rose gold) plus multiple options for the strap (in various colors, including grey, brown, black, blue or white), together with details such as the color of the stitching. In addition to these possibilities, the style and color of the hands and the dial, including the new handmade guilloché options, will also go through this personalization process.
This online process allows configuring Armin Strom’s innovative watch to different price levels (which are updated live through the configuration, for a complete transparency), with a starting price of CHF 54,000 for a stainless steel variant – which is offered for the exact same price as serial models from Armin Strom.
Resonance is a sophisticated and demanding horological technique that has rarely been attempted, let alone mastered in the pursuit of horological accuracy, precision, and rate stability. Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695), the inventor of the pendulum clock, was the first to discover the resonance of two separate pendulum clocks, while in the eighteenth century Abraham-Louis Breguet demonstrated his mastery of the phenomenon. Since then, only a handful of watchmakers have attempted to harness the effects of resonance, whose advantages of resonance are threefold:
- A stabilizing effect on timekeeping (advantageous to accuracy).
- A conservation of energy (think of a professional cyclist riding in the shadow of another cyclist in a racing situation).
- A reduction of negative effects on timekeeping accuracy due to outside perturbation such as shock to the balance staff, which in turn keeps the rate more stable and increases precision.
The two visible, connected oscillators make their revolutions in opposite directions, one rotating clockwise and the other counterclockwise. After winding, the twin balance wheels need approximately 10 minutes to become synchronous. The case band pusher at 2 o’clock resets the luminous twin seconds’ displays to zero, simultaneously resetting the twin balance wheels. The Mirrored Force Resonance is the most complicated timepiece that Armin Strom manufactures and a patent has been registered.
