Tom Wamsgans, played by British actor Matthew Macfadyen, is perhaps the most interesting character in HBO’s new original series “Succession” which just aired the final episode of Season 1 this past Sunday.

Macfadyen, who has a distinctly British accent in real life is able to speak without the accent and sounds fittingly like the American character he plays in the drama which is based around the family of media mogul Logan Roy (who has similarities to real-life media mogul Rupert Murdoch).

Matthew Macfadyen wears fake watch in HBO's Succession

Macfadyen wears what appears to be a men’s Cartier Ballon Bleu in Episodes 4 and 5, however, after closer examination, the watch does not appear to be an authentic Ballon Bleu. Two key elements stand out, based on viewing the watch in close-ups on the screen. The first is that the watch he is wearing appears to have long thin lugs with a standard leather strap, whereas the real Ballon Bleu has short lugs and requires a specially integrated strap. The second element is that at 3 o’clock there appears to be a Roman numeral hour marker on Tom’s watch whereas the real Ballon Bleu has a date window, with a black date wheel, in place of the Roman numeral hour marker.

It’s hard to fully determine which watches are real and fake in movies and shows, but in this instance, it seems pretty clear that it’s not a Cartier Ballon Bleu. Nevertheless, the show, which has received an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 1, is pretty entertaining particularly because of Tom Wamsgan’s comedic relief, even if he’s not wearing a genuine Ballon Bleu.
