At Baselworld, Hublot unveiled a watch with a massive power reserve of 50-days — a world record for a hand-wound tourbillon wristwatch. The MP-05 LaFerrari Ferrari is a special series created as an homage to Ferrari’s new LaFerrari supercar.
In fact, it was developed “in technical and design terms – entirely in parallel with the car, alongside the Ferrari teams.” They even share a number of common elements.
The MP-05 utilizes 637 components, 108 of which are jewels. And to achieve the record-breaking power reserve, the watch utilizes 11 series-coupled power barrels. All 11 barrels, which are arranged like a spinal column and interconnected so they do not discharge in turn but support each other, are visible in the center of the dial.
The watch’s sapphire crystal features a very complex shape that was made to look like the car’s outline. The case back is open and is also designed to look like the supercar. The case is made from black PVD titanium and it is topped by a titanium and carbon insert in its center, which also reveals the winding crown. “The time-setting crown is positioned under the case. Both are completely integrated into the design, and therefore practically invisible.”
Functions include hour and minute displays via anodized black aluminum cylinders with luminous markings. Power reserve indicated by an anodized black aluminum cylinder with luminous markings. And seconds indicated by an anodized black aluminum cylinder luminous markings. A suspended vertical tourbillon. Invisible manual winding via power tool, similar to a drill to remove wheels from a race car. The watch beats at 3Hz.
“The movement has an original display, featuring first off on the front vertical face the small seconds indicated by means of an aluminum cylinder fastened onto the suspended Tourbillon cage (significantly bigger than usual with a cage diameter of 14.50 mm, for even better appreciation of the mechanical parts).
The hour and minute are displayed to the right of the barrels, also indicated by means of one anodized black aluminum cylinder each. On their left is the cylinder indicating the power reserve. Reinforcing bars on either side, made from anodized red aluminum, bring to mind Ferrari’s red signature.
A small detail, but one which makes reading the time easier; on each cylinder the size of the numerals has been maximized with white SuperLuminova™, to enhance the display for ease of reading. This is all rounded off by a rubber strap with a special folding buckle in black PVD titanium.”
The presentation case, made from Scuderi leather and carbon fiber, contains the tools for winding the watch. Limited edition of 50 numbered pieces. The retail price is $345,000. (Ref. 905.ND.0001.RX)
