Since the introduction debut of a sapphire concept piece in 2017, followed by the official launch of the Full Metal 5000 in March 2018, the iconic 43.2 mm x 43.2 mm square-shaped, DW5000 look from 1983 has become increasingly popular amongst diehard G-Shock fans, and new watch enthusiasts alike. This is thanks to the move upscale to a premium metal finish, versus a resin-based case, and the used of advanced Bluetooth and Atomic technology that sets the watch for you.

I personally find the original Full Metal 5000 versions that I reviewed last year to be quite attractive, durable, and well priced. However, until now, all of the variations have had mostly shiny, polished surfaces, and I think for that understated look the matte finish will be a great alternative.

With the introduction of the Full Metal Black Aged IP GMW-B5000V-1, at Baselworld 2019, there’s now a matte version. Designed to have a weathered, patinated look, the black IP coating is not only unique, and arguably quite attractive, it’s also very scratch resistant, making this a great option to wear anywhere. Of course, it has all the shock and drop resistance of a G-Shock, along with 200 meters of water-resistance. But the original resin models and the regular steel versions will show exterior scratches and marks if you are rough with them, but this won’t thanks to the durability of ion-plating.

A solar-powered quartz movement with Bluetooth and Atomic timekeeping drives the time and all functions of the 5000 Series, providing a reliable and incredibly accurate timepiece, that you never need to set or charge.
