Seiko unveiled 27 references yesterday as part of their newly redesigned 2019 Seiko 5 Sports collection.
The Seiko 5 comes in a 42 mm x 13.4 mm stainless steel case available in an array of case finishes (steel, matte PVD black, and rose-gold plated), dial variations, and with numerous strap and bracelet options.
The dial features large applied luminescent indices. The hour hand is sword-shaped, the minute hand is arrow-tipped, and the seconds hand has a lollipop-shaped counterweight. Driving the hours, minutes, central seconds, and day/date is Japanese made automatic caliber 4R36 which beats at 3Hz, has 24 jewels, and a 41-hour power reserve.
The bezel is steel, with an aluminum insert matching the dial color, and rotates unidirectionally. A Hardlex mineral crystal with sapphire coating. Crown placement is at 4 o’clock and is screw-down. Caseback is solid. Water-resistance is 100 meters.
To maintain the excellent price point, the cases and some components are manufactured in China, and as mentioned above the crystal is made of Hardlex, not a sapphire. Retail prices are expected to range from $315-$380 when they become available next month.
